Frequently Asked Questions about the School

How long is the course?
The course is spread over 4 days. It starts every day at 9 am and finishes at 5.30 pm.

How many participants can you have in any one course?
There is a maximum of 6 new participants. There may be previous students coming back to refresh their memory.

Who is the course for?
Anyone who is interested in babycarrying and intends on teaching it. If you already have some carrying experience, it will most likely benefit you, but you will also have to get past your experiences to learn new skills. If you are very new to babycarrying this course covers basic knowledge as well as advanced knowledge. The course is built in such a way that each time you attend you might pick up new things. There are handouts and videos available to be used as refreshers if need be.

Do I need to do anything before the course?
The more you prepare, the more you will get out of the course. I will ask you to have read the Slingababy website and watched some videos. The links to these will be given after the first payment has been received.

Do I need to bring anything?
A pen! All the equipment will be available (slings and demo dolls). Feel free to bring any sling you have, especially the ones you are not familiar with. You are welcome to record anything you wish to, as long as it is only for your personal use. Refreshments are provided.

Do I need to do anything after the course?

You will be asked to do a project of your choice to benefit the babycarrying  community. It can be an article, a video, an audio document, a compilation of documents, whatever suits you. I will also ask you to get feedback from your customers to be passed onto me, for us to discuss and to check how we can improve (the number will vary and we will set it together).

Is the course focussed on wraps?
No it most definitely is not. The babycarrying community encompasses many different types of slings and it would be a shame to only focus on one type. We will work with woven and stretchy wraps, ring slings, mei tais, buckle carriers, pouches, skin to skin tubes, traditional carriers, hybrid carriers...

Can I bring my baby/toddler?

It is up to you, providing he/she is healthy (meaning no chicken pox for instance!). The course is quite intense, so to get the most out of it, you might prefer to be able to focus without having to look after a little one. You can bring another adult to help out or we can try and organise some child care. If you decide that it is best for you to come with your little one, I will ask you to make sure he/she does not disturb the other participants' learning. Remember that you can come as many times as you need, so if you are missing some parts of the course, you will be able to come again!

Is the course recognised by BABI (British Association of Babywearing Instructors)?
Yes it is.

Is the course accredited?
No it isn't and I do not intend on getting it accredited. My intention is for the course to be of excellent quality: technically, theoretically, humanly... my accreditation is to have my name and reputation behind the students.
Accreditation means a focus on theory and testing when I want the focus to be on practical and communication skills.

Will I get a certificate of attendance?

Yes you will. After completion of the little project and reception of the feedback from your customers, you will also receive a certificate of completion of the training.

Will I be able to teach straight after the course?
This is the aim! The reason why the course is spread over 4 days is to give you a chance to take in new skills as well as the new teaching methods. It is one thing to know how to do, it is another to know how to teach.

Will I be free to teach the way I want or am I expected to do it a specific way?

There is a big section of the course about the ethics behind being a consultant. The philosophy behind Slingababy Training School is about empowering the parents. There are also methods to help you teach. However, you are free to use those or not.

Are there some Continuing Professional Development days?

Yes there are. Twice a year you will be invited back to get to know the other consultants and share our skills and knowledge. These will always be free of charge.
